I was shocked last night by the news that Gary Moore, the rock and blues guitarist has died whilst on holiday in Spain at the age of 58. Most famously he will probably be remembered as the guitarist with the band Thin Lizzy. But when I first heard of Gary Moore I was about 17 and he was a solo artist who was best known for his strong blues riffs and melodic, haunting songs such as 'Parisienne Walkways', 'Still got the Blues' and 'Separate Ways'. It was great music to chill out to or drive in the car with. My favourite was a song called 'Always Gonna Love You' with a great piano sound and strong soulful lyrics.
He was an ex-pat Belfast boy like myself and one of my strongest memories regarding his music is that when I return to my old stomping grounds and meet up with the Belfast crew we always seem to hear that old rock bar favourite 'The Boys are Back in Town'. My thoughts are with Gary Moore's family and friends at this time. I can only hope that whatever comes next, he and Phil Lynott (the lead singer of Thin Lizzy who died in 1986) are raising a glass and catching up on old times. There'll be a mighty party in Heaven tonight.
